Literacy Program Reached More than 2000 Children

According to PISA, every fifth child has difficulties with reading and text comprehension in Hungary. With the objective to improve reading skills with a special focus on disadvantaged children, United Way Hungary has continued its literacy initiative launched in Spring 2014 and by some GE offices also joining in, the program has now reached more than 2000 children nationwide. United Way Hungary applies a method of combining donation of gently used books to institutions (mainly schools and children’s homes) and involvement of volunteer teachers developing locally relevant programs using the books received. The local programs also create great examples for better utilization of peer relationships to improve disadvantaged children’s reading skills.

Institutions involved are asked to share their best practices with United Way Hungary which later will be disseminated to inspire other teachers, librarians and further communities specializing in children’s education.
